This year, the International Christian Retail Show—ICRS as it is now known, formerly CBA or the Christian Booksellers’ Association—met for several days in Orlando, Florida in July.
This event will soon be sixty years old, and it draws people from all over the world. Day One’s exhibition booth was well positioned near one of the main entrances, and I found myself with some remarkable opportunities to speak to people from several continents. Particular interest was expressed in making Day One books available in other languages, as well as having select titles available as digital downloads. I find this particularly exciting, as it demonstrates that God’s purposes for us may well be to make an impact on people’s lives all around the globe, and in ways that might never have been envisaged in the early 1990s when the work of book publication first began.
Here are a few comments that I noted from various visitors to the booth:
• ‘I love Day One books, and I want my wholesale company to work more closely with you.’ (UK distributor)
• ‘Oh, oh, I am so pleased to see you are here!’ (Korean translation rights broker)
• ‘Wow, look at this idea—don’t you guys do anything wrong?’ (USA digital download producer)
• ‘I’ll take 500 sets of this series please.’ (Australian discounter)
• ‘I love the Day One travel guides; do you have one on Martyn Lloyd-Jones?’ (USA author)
• ‘How may I become involved in editing Day One books?’ (USA freelance editor)
• ‘My good friend (name withheld) mentioned we should stop by and check your booth as you have such good books!’ (USA small-time bookstore managers)
• ‘We’d like to feature your top twenty-five books.’ (Canadian mail-order supplier)
• ‘I’m hoping to promote your books in Hawaii.’ (Honolulu bookstore manager)
Of course, the global financial climate is challenging, but God’s work goes on. I believe God has entrusted his truth to us through a diverse range of gifted authors, and it is our desire to take the message of the gospel to the ends of the earth by providing resources for evangelism and discipleship in today’s world.
